Outside the box

thefrogman:

I did it. I ventured out into the big scary world and saw the Avengers in IMAX 3D.
If I’m being honest, I kind of regret it.
The movie was amazing. It was everything I hoped it would be. But my movie-going experience made it very hard to enjoy myself. I had never seen a 3D movie before. I did not care for it. I felt like I was being forced to exercise my eyes. It was as if a drill sergeant came into the theater and told my eyes to drop and give’em 50. The glasses dimmed the picture, desaturated the color. Some of the motion was hard to focus on and felt really blurry. All of the beautiful detail that digital artists spent months creating was lost to a marketing gimmick. And it isn’t really 3D. It is optical trickery that makes different 2D images seem nearer or farther away. Like paper cutouts. That is two and a half D at the most.

Then about 3/4 of the way in to the movie I had to pee. The aliens were pouring out of the sky and my bladder was screaming. I could not bring myself to miss any of the movie. This is the first film I’ve seen in a theater in 4 years and I refused to miss any of it. Then my fatigue started kicking into overdrive. My muscles were struggling to keep me upright in my seat and my brain started getting foggy. Any normal human being would probably just get up, go to the bathroom and find a nice bench to lay on. But I was in my seat, eyes strained, bladder at capacity, brain melting, muscles aching… because I am a giant nerd and I can’t miss the end of this goddamn movie.
It wasn’t worth it. It wasn’t worth the terrible energy hangover I am currently feeling. The outside world and I just don’t seem to get along.
My brother’s wedding was worth it. One of my very good friends is having a wedding reception in July. I think that would be worth it. But in that dark theater surrounded by strangers I was just as alone as I am in my room watching movies. Only I can’t pause, I can’t lay down, and I don’t have to make my eyeballs do jumping jacks.
On the upside, I did steal these bitchin’ glasses.

YES! We always try and catch the 2D showing at our little local theater if they have one. 3D is obnoxious and a waste of...

I really don’t like this guy’s attitude…oh, and learn what good 3D is before you waste your money.
